Interview with Ruth Van Soom

Tell us more about yourself. What do you do? What do you love to do?

Monday to Friday, you’ll find us hard at work at Oona, the PR, communications and event agency. On Saturdays, you might find me at “Fresh” in Antwerp or scouring the globe in search of or creating personal content for our baby, The Merrymakers.

What is your favorite city in Belgium/the world?

My favorite city in Belgium would have to be my hometown, Antwerp. As for the rest of the world, that’s a tough choice. Tel Aviv, Paris and New York would all tie for tirest place.

Can you share some of your secret hotspots?

When in Antwerp, I always go to Caffènation for a good coffee, to the Biologisch Dynamische Bakkerij, Tinsel or Perruche for lunch. And my favorite dinner choices are Veranda and La Tarantella.

What would you prefer: an apartment in London or a private deserted island?

Can’t I just have both?

What's your favorite place on the planet?

I have quite a few favorite spots like the Pyramids, Petra and Rome for the history; Paris, Tel Aviv and New York for the adventure and energy... but I also love my own cozy apartment in Antwerp and my parent’s house for personal reasons.

What is your favorite mode of transport? (Bike, plane, train, boat, bus)

My bike for short distances, the plane to go far away, the train to get my mind straight and the car when it’s raining  (as you can see, I hate having to choose).

What's the first word that comes to mind when you hear the word Eastpak?

Eastpak always reminds me of the great trips I’ve made. So I would pick “traveling” and “adventure”.

What surprises you about Eastpak today?

I’ve always been a fan of Eastpak’s products. But the one that stands out for me today is the shopper. It’s a great and practical alternative for my designer bags and it keeps my laptop happy, too.

What are your thoughts on the cheetah print?

My choice of outfit is usually rather clean and minimalistic. I hardly ever wear prints. But my accessories can be a little crazy so the Cheetah print is just fine. It’s like the best of both worlds, not too clean and not too crazy.

What do you think about our Aminimal accessories? (Skew, Foldr, Cherm)

I’m a big fan of the sleek design and details. I like the way the logo is done and the leather detailing on the zipper. These accessories would definitely match my Eastpak collection.

How would you combine this bag?

The first outfit that popped into my head when I saw the Soukie was blue skinny jeans, a black coat (knee length), loose pullover, sneakers, a large knitted scarf and a funky beanie. A bit of a mix of chic and street!

You run a fashion blog. Do you recommend a lot of funky and crazy prints?

It depends on who you are and what your personality is like and of course there’s a difference between prints on clothes and accessories. So for myself, I would say not too much print but for Nathalie, I’d say go crazy because she can get away with it.

Who is your fashion icon? And Why?

A few designers I really admire are Haider Ackermann, Isabel Marant, Raf Simons, and Dries Van Noten (I’m Belgian and proud of it ). Julia Restoin Roitfeld is a true contemporary style icon for me. She’s extremely classy, stylish, and elegant.
